E.P. Education, a Romanian edtech company, wanted to build a digital learning product that would help high school students prepare for competitive university admission exams — specifically in medicine, engineering, and law. The existing market offered static PDF study guides and generic quiz apps with no adaptive learning, no competitive element, and no way for students to measure their progress against peers. E.P. Education needed a platform that felt engaging enough to keep 17-year-olds coming back daily, while being rigorous enough that teachers and parents would trust the content. The content library included over 12,000 questions across 8 subjects, each requiring metadata tagging, difficulty calibration, and mapping to specific exam curricula.

> solution

We built a responsive web application with a mobile-first design that combines structured study paths with gamified competition. The core quiz engine supports timed practice sessions, full mock exams that mirror actual admission test formats, and a spaced repetition review mode for weak areas. Each question tracks answer time, correctness, and revision count to build a personalized difficulty profile per student. The competitive layer includes real-time leaderboards — daily, weekly, and by subject — plus head-to-head challenge matches where students can compete directly against friends or random opponents. We implemented an Elo-inspired rating system that adjusts based on question difficulty and opponent strength, keeping rankings meaningful. For content management, we built an admin panel where subject experts can create, tag, and organize questions with rich formatting, images, and multiple explanation types (short answer, detailed walkthrough, video link). Analytics dashboards show students their progress over time, predicted exam scores, and specific weak spots. Teachers and institutions get aggregate performance views and can assign targeted practice sets.

The platform launched with 3,200 students in the first cohort and grew to over 11,000 active users by the second exam season. Average daily session time was 23 minutes — roughly 3x the industry benchmark for educational apps. Students who used the platform for at least 30 days before their exam scored an average of 14% higher than the national mean on admission tests. The head-to-head challenge feature drove the highest engagement, with over 45,000 matches played in the first six months. E.P. Education secured a second round of funding based on these metrics.
